So the department he graduated from is technically History. The section of history he studied was African American history. To be more specific Slavery Louisiana History, African American Louisiana History. At the level of PhD you focus on a specific subject or topic in a more general field. And history is quite a large field/subject/discipline. Functionally it was African American history.
And that's what matters to this conversation imo.
