Hey everyone!
I’m about to pull the trigger on a basement renovation and I’ve labbed out a plan based on a lot of late-night research. I’m not a pro, so I’m hoping to get some feedback before I start stapling 1,200 lbs of rubber to my floor joists.
The Project:
- Space: 1,300 sq. ft. finished basement (1998 build).
- Current State: Old-school "doctor's office" drop ceiling at 6.5 - 7 feet.
- The Goal: Maximize headspace. Removing the grid gives us ~6 inches of immediate height, plus the "black hole" effect of an open ceiling.
- The Vibe: Sprayed black (Dryfall), industrial/modern, but we hang out here a lot (projector movies, pinball machines, etc.).
The Soundproofing Plan:
- Mass: Staple Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) directly to the subfloor between the joists to block impact noise from the living room above.
- Absorption: Friction-fit Rockwool Safe’n’Sound (estimating 22–24 bags) into the joist cavities to kill echoes/reverb.
- Finish: Spray the whole thing Flat Black. (Considering a "galaxy" glitter effect—is this a logistical nightmare with a sprayer?)
Where I need your expertise:
- The "Gap" Problem: The bathroom, gym, and furnace room walls currently hit the drop ceiling. How do I effectively cap these walls to stop light and sound from leaking into the main theater area?
- Future-Proofing Wires: I have a lot of low-voltage, ethernet, HDMI, audio cables, etc. If I tuck them behind MLV and Rockwool, am I screwing myself for future cable runs? Is there a better way to "channel" them for easy access later?
- Bug Control: Without the drop ceiling to hide the "ecosystem," what are the best practices for keeping the joists from becoming a spider sanctuary? Is regular shop-vaccing just part of the lifestyle now?
- The Weight: I’ve calculated about 1.6 lbs/sq. ft. added weight. My house was built in '98—is there any reason I should be concerned about the joists handling the MLV + Rockwool combo?
Prep: Plan is to move everything (Pinball machines, furniture) to the center, double-wrap in plastic, and spray. The carpet is being replaced afterward, so I’m not worried about the floor.
Any "gotchas" I’m missing? I’ve got one shot at this before the paint goes on! Thanks in advance.
