Burnt the clutch so much I left a cloud of smoke

I’ve got a grand i10, Hyundai. They’re pretty well known for their reverse gear which grinds even when you use it brand new. This car is under 20k miles and I’ve already pushed my clutch through some nasty challenges stuck in snow and going down single lane country lanes.

Today I went down a single file country lane and had to reverse up a really steep hill to make way for another car.

Clutch burnt so hard it left a visible cloud of smoke in the rear mirror.

Just wondering how much damage that is causing. Also wondering what actually internally happens when the clutch burns. What specific part of the clutch is “burning” and how would that lead to later clutch failure?
