Is buyer damaging items and blaming on usps for partial refund?

I’m a little suspicious that a buyer has damaged items to get a partial refund
For back story, they bought $500 worth of comics. Before shipping, they said to pack securely because their items get damaged. Each of the three comic was secured with scotch tape between two backing boards, and then comics were stacked and taped to a bottom piece of cardboard, with the top and bottom cardboard taped together. My downfall is that I used a bubble padded envelope to ship these in, which is hindsight hurts my case. They said the scotch tape was floating in the envelope. They provided pictures of two of the comics with corner damage, as well as a picture of the cardboard with a bent corner. What I think is suspicious is that they showed a thumb sized indentation about midline of the bottom of a comic, and I don’t understand how that would happen considering there’s not damage in the same location on the cardboard. When they sent a picture of the comics together, the backing boards were loose and not taped like I sent them. There were other weird consistencies in their messages (saying a comic had a corner piece tore off and then later saying they don’t open up the comics when they arrived damaged like this. It’d been over 24 hours since they opened the claim and I’m worried whatnot’s bot support will just sign with them and give them a full refund. Should I try to fight this or just provide a partial refund of $150 (still making about $250 in profit). Also, does whatnot using their seller fees to lessen the refund given on my end? What should I do?
