Why is number theory labeled as a writing course in math degree plans? In undergrad, my number theory class was considered the “writing embedded” course. All degrees required a “writing embedded” course at some point, so I figured this was just the selected class to make that happen.

Now, in grad school at a completely different university, Elementary Number Theory is also labeled as a writing based class.

Obviously proofs are written. Algebra, Analysis, topology, etc. are all obviously entirely written at both the undergraduate and graduate level without a “writing based” label. Is it a coincidence or is there a reason that number theory is selected as the “writing embedded” or “writing based” course?
