Lore
Following the end of WW2, the Balkans would become under Soviet control. A puppet government would be established in 1945, and in this timeline would be much more nationalistic than irl.
Societal division begins
Bulgaria’s Turkish population mostly remained side by side with their Bulgarian neighbors. That was, until communists attacked Turks as a “foreign invader”. This kind of rhetoric would eventually start fringe and small in extremist circles, but eventually become mainstream, resulting in more and more ethnic violence. Animosity began to spread, Bulgarians and Turks became insular, not trusting the other group. With time, society became deeply divided, and some Turks began calls for independence.
Independence
The final straw of this built up hatred would be the death of a Turkish woman at the hands of a Bulgarian man, she would become the martyr for the independence movement. In 1954, it would be outright proclaimed by the pro-democracy Turkish Liberation Party, claiming an area from Varna to Haskovo as their territory, and proclaiming their nation as “The Republic of Bulgaristan”. This would be unrecognized by the government, which swiftly shut down the party, it would be reopened in turkey and continue its work there.
War against Bulgaria
Following the shutting down of the main pro Independence party, Turks began a guerrilla war against the government, backed by the west. They would achieve many victories but eventually reach a stalemate. Soon into the war, the UN would intervene and attempt to solve the situation.
UN Plan
The UN would step in and draw up this map to try and appease both sides, an economic union between both nations would take place, while Sofia would be an international city. This plan was accepted by the Turks, but was rejected by the Bulgarians, who demanded all of their former territory be given back to them.
Aftermath
Following the failure of the UN plan, the situation would only get worse. Bulgaristan would fight more wars against Bulgaria, taking most of it. Only the Varna Strip in the east, half of Sofia and western parts of the country would remain under Bulgarian control.
Following the recognition of Bulgaristan by major world powers and peace through force, it became one of the biggest allies in the Cold War against the Soviets, and even today is a major western ally. It is considered one of the four Turkic nations, along with turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Its main industries are technology, agriculture, mining, and travel.
