Stranger of Paradise gets slept on HARD.

Yes, the story is campy, chessy and ridiculous, but goddamn did the developers make up for it in the gameplay. I always thought the idea of making a soulslike Final Fantasy game could turn great and this is it.

The combat is very fast and you constantly have to be absorbing attacks to build your MP in order to use your abilities. You can equip 2 Jobs on your character and instantly swap between them during battle, with multiple weapons, abilities, equipable combos and even unique abilities provided by certain weapons or stolen from enemies during the fight. Certain weapons can execute different attack animations depending on the direction you're pressing. Its really deep and extremely replayable.

If you're not a soulslike fan, don't worry... it has difficulty options. You can play completely solo on the highest difficulty or add up to two CPU characters and/or choose a lower difficulty.

It reviewed well back when it was released and now that I played it, I'm surprised it's not brought up too much compared to even indies in this genre. Which makes me think it's never getting a sequel. I was thouroughly surprised by this game.

I mostly only use RPG Maker to create maps and it's always been a dream of me to create a tool to generate maps that I could use as a base and develop over them. The main challenge was figuring out how to interpret the JSON files that RPG Maker has and... I failed that challenge lol. But I did come up with an idea that's working pretty nice.

I created a simple custom marker tileset that you can import into your project replacing Tab C. You can download these directly in the itch.io page and import to your project (check the images above for visual guidance).

Here's how you use this tool:

  • Visit the page: https://ladyluck.itch.io/rpg-maker-world-map-generator-online
  • Create your map and download the JSON file.
  • Copy and paste the JSON inside the data folder of your project (where your maps are).
  • Make sure you have a map with the same name inside your project.
  • (!!) Download and replace your World_C tileset with the custom tileset provided in the page. It will have markers showing you how to fill in the map.
  • Reload your project and use your autotiles on Tab A to fill the map.
  • Done!

Listen, I really appreciate Capcom for what they’ve done with SF6. I wasn’t into fighting games before, but one of my friends started teaching me SF5 back on Season 3, and it finally clicked. I only recently got around to buying SF6 and immediately started playing Marisa in Ranked (got her to Master in about 60 hours).

Then I hopped into World Tour… and it’s just so bad.

It starts off kind of charming at first, but there’s a whole bunch of backtracking and grinding that just drags on for a loooong time. You’re constantly being interrupted by messages on your phone, and the enemies in the world are REALLY good at tracking you down. All they do is push you into boring fights (which sometimes made my FPS drop to like 20 for some reason, even though I’m using a 4060?).

If you try to rush it, you quickly realize your character doesn’t deal much damage to NPCs that are around 5 levels above you, so you kind of have to grind to their level or spend money on items. I was expecting to have some cool, casual fun with the mode, but the way it’s designed just feels like it’s engineered to make you waste a ton of time. I’m really not feeling it.
