Here is a brief, plain-English breakdown of exactly why compounding pharmacies were allowed to sell tirzepatide, and why the government is shutting it down.

1: Why Telehealth and Compounding Places Could Sell It Under federal law, compounding pharmacies are strictly banned from making "essentially copies" of patented, brand-name commercial drugs.

However, there is a major legal loophole, if the FDA declares a brand-name drug is in a national shortage, compounding pharmacies are legally allowed to mass-produce copies using raw bulk ingredients to protect public health and keep patients supplied.

Because Eli Lilly couldn't manufacture enough Mounjaro and Zepbound to meet the massive surge in demand over the last few years, the FDA put tirzepatide on the official Drug Shortage List.

Telehealth companies and compounding labs jumped into that loophole to sell cheaper, custom-mixed versions. "Compounded tirzepitide "

Phase 2: What Changed and Why It Stops by June 29th, two major things happened to permanently close that legal loophole:

  1. The Shortage Officially Ended, The FDA officially took tirzepatide off the national shortage list because Eli Lilly proved they scaled up their manufacturing facilities and can now meet the national demand.

This immediately stripped away the legal protection for standard local compounding pharmacies (known as 503A pharmacies).

  1. The Final Door is Closing on June 29th, Large-scale mass-production compounding facilities (known as 503B outsourcing facilities) tried to find a secondary loophole to keep making the drug. To stop this, the FDA issued a final proposal declaring there is "no clinical need" to compound tirzepatide.

The FDA opened a public comment window on this final rule that runs until June 29th. Once that date passes and the rule is finalized, the very last legal avenue for large-scale compounding facilities to use raw bulk tirzepatide will completely vanish.

The Bottom Line Compounding places were only ever a temporary safety valve for a national supply shortage. Now that the manufacturer has enough supply, the FDA is shutting down the off-brand market to protect drug patents and enforce standard safety approvals.

Luckily for me, for at least a short time, I saved up about 6 months worth of 15 mg doses so I still have some left but only a limited amount. The only thing you can do now is buy what you can by June 29th

Unless you can afford to get it thru your regular pharmacy thru Eli Lilly then you are out too.

Good luck to everyone that needs it like me.
