I have a question about a debate I had. Please tell me if I’m wrong?

This is a cross post from r/nativeamerican no one answered so I figured I’d post it here

I have a serious question

For backround, I am white, my son is white and he is in 4th grade.

My sons school is making them dress up as “colonial americans”.. I don’t like the idea of this at all to begin with… but we have to go along with it.

My son wants to dress up as a Native American, I said absolutely NOT, I explained it’s wrong and why it’s wrong. His father disagrees. His father says “he wants to wear it out of respect to natives there is nothing wrong with that” then proceeded to tell me to ask the native community if what he is saying is considered cultural appropriation…

Am I being to “sensitive” as he says? Or am I correct in not allowing my son to wear tribal clothing?

Please no racist comments.

TIA.
