Hello from Germany!
I found this sub reading about a local news story overtaking nearly every press headline in germany for weeks now.
Ill keep it short the standed whale is not an orca, if i am wrong to post here thats ok. Pls delet it if its strictly against the sub rules! ( i looked them up but coudnt really find out if it is prohibited)
Now to the main part/question.
I found in this sub mutiple postings about the problem with dolphin and whale sanctuaries and what happens to them after their captive lifes. This subject seems to be atleast related. Noone ever mentioned to but him in a sanctuary to get better or anything befor releasing him. As far as articles go they observed his heart rate and breathing intervals to gauge his wellbeing.
A shirt overview of what has happened, in case these news from germany never left the german press:
A humpbackwhale (buckelwal) stranded on a sandy area in the eastern sea (right side from denmark, more to the southern coast towards germany) over the weeks there were multiple rescue attempts from official goverment aided ones to fully privatly financed ones the ministies are tryingg to get actual data from. There is a bunch of controversy rn bc noone knows how the whale really got brought back into the north sea, there were no pics or filming in place to document. The allowed on sight vet (small animals vet as far as i know, whyever that was choosen who knows) said some remarcably disturbing things about the on bord proceedings of the last attempt which apparently (! That's not really been verified tbh) released the whale into the North sea. It was the last of maybe a dozen attempts to free the whale which got called "hope" and "timmy". Timmy went back and stranded him self atleast 5 times maybe more depending on how you want to count. A bunch of people demanded transparency and a striking number of ill-equipped appearing "experts" were part of it.
My questions is addressed to whoever in this sub has been looking into animal welfare and keeping the animals healthy, regarding nonexisting/non approved sanctuaries and experts/advocats.
What do you guys think about it?
As far as "reliable" press outlets wrote there were voices from
Veterinary Dr. Kirsten Tönniess
Greenpeace-Expert Thilo Maack
Whale Sanctuary Project expert Jeffry Foster
A danish marin biologist Peter Madsen from the University of Aarhus
the german Institut for Terrestrische und Aquatische Wildtierforschung (ITAW)
the minister for ecology and nature from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Till Backhaus
Experts from the german maritim museum in Stralsund.
I am wondering if any of those has been known and heard off. The question came up bc the stranding of the whale timmy was highly popularised by right wing advocates and press. Its super difficult to find reliable Intel about those people if your digital sphear is centered in germany. Crosschecking every outlet and article is tidious and nerve-wracking.
And I thought maybe some of you have heard about timmy's story or the ongoing criticism about what happened to him.
