Installers: Carpeting before or after installing baseboards - and what height?
Question for professional installers: We're finishing up remodeling an upper floor. The only thing left are baseboards/doorcasings and carpeting.
Do you prefer the baseboards/doorcasings installed before or after carpeting? And do you have a preference on height above the subfloor (I've read 3/8-1/2" gap)?
I would prefer to install the baseboard first so that I don't have to worry about paint on the carpet (and touch-ups are still easier even if carpet installers scuff the baseboards), but it also helps having a solid subfloor for reference to keep the baseboard nice and straight vs installing after.
My last question is door casing/door frames. I know door casing should be set to the same height as the baseboards, but what about door frames? Would you also prefer the door frame cut to the same height to so carpet can be tucked under the whole frame?
We don't have a carpet company lined up yet, otherwise I would just ask them directly.
