Mr. Meaty (2005–2007)

Mr. Meaty (2005–2007)

I randomly thought about Mr. Meaty and I’m not gonna lie, this show used to creep me out 😭 but I still watched it.

It was about two friends working at a fast food spot in the mall, but everything about it was just… off. The puppets looked kinda disturbing, the humor was weird, and some of the episodes were straight up uncomfortable.

At the same time, that’s kind of what made it stand out. It didn’t feel like a typical Nickelodeon show at all. It was gross, awkward, and chaotic in a way that you don’t really see anymore.

I feel like this is one of those shows people either completely forgot about or remember and go “yeah that show was wild.”

Did anyone else watch this or was I the only one 😭

Ever discover a show you didn’t know was a 90s hit?

I’m a late 90s baby, but I grew up in the early 2000s, a true 2000s kid. I didn’t even know who Kenan and Kel were until their show got reruns. I remember watching The Amanda Show all the time but had no clue it was a spin-off.

All That is the real surprise for me. Did anyone else from our generation remember Seasons 7 to 10? I still remember watching them, even though those seasons aren’t really talked about anymore. That’s how I got to know cast members like Giovonnie Samuels, Jamie Lynn Spears (before Zoey 101), and Jack DeSena.

I also remember SNICK On-Air Dare. Watching that as a little kid was wild, but now when I hear the theme song, I can’t help but dance. The 10th Anniversary special is still stuck in my memory too.

It’s crazy realizing a show I watched as a toddler and kid in the early 2000s was actually a 90s hit, not some new sketch show.

What about you all? Which show did you find out was a 90s classic?

What About Your Friends (1995)

I was digging through some old TV specials and remembered What About Your Friends. This aired in 1995 as a CBS Schoolbreak Special. It’s about three high school girls who are about to graduate and have always planned to stick together, but as things start changing, their friendship gets tested in ways that feel really real.

I was surprised to see Lark Voorhies and Monica Calhoun in it, and it was directed by Gina Prince‑Bythewood before she got big. It’s only about an hour long, but it actually tackles teen friendships and the drama of growing up in a way that feels honest, not cheesy.

It’s actually on YouTube if you want to watch it, and it’s kind of wild how well it holds up. I don’t see this special talked about much anymore, but it’s definitely worth a look.

Taina (2001–2002)

I randomly started thinking about Taina and how much I used to enjoy it. It followed Taina Morales, a teenager at a performing arts school in New York trying to chase her dreams in music and acting.

I remember the theme song and just the whole vibe of the show. It felt different from other Nickelodeon shows at the time, especially with the focus on performing arts and her Puerto Rican background.

It only lasted a couple seasons, but it always stuck with me. It’s actually good to go back and watch the episodes on YouTube too.

Did anyone else watch this back then?

Unpopular opinion: Summer Walker’s voice is too soft for stadium-level R&B impact.

I know this might get some eye rolls but hear me out. Summer Walker has a beautiful, emotional voice and her music is perfect for late night, chill vibes. The thing is, her voice is really soft and delicate, and I don’t think it would fill a stadium the way Beyoncé, Usher, or H.E.R. can.

Her style works great for small settings and playlists, but if we are talking iconic R&B presence, she just doesn’t have that big stage power yet.

Not trying to disrespect her talent at all, I just think her whispery, intimate energy doesn’t translate to arena level performances. I’m curious what y’all think.
