DIY bagless conversion on the cheap

I picked up from the garbage an AEG Vampyr bagged vacuum, perfectly functional.

I'd like to turn it into a bagless vacuum, because I can't be arsed sourcing bags for it.

Is there anything stopping me cutting a piece of existing bag and duct-taping it to the intake inside the bag compartment?

Kinda like this: https://i.imgur.com/Mld81Dz.jpeg

This way the dirt would just fill up the compartment instead, and I'd just have to open it and tip it over into a large trash bag to clean it out, and occasionally clean or replace the piece of bag acting as a filter.

I obviously don't mind the compartment itself getting dirty.
