We had a scary night Thursday night

We came home from the store and let the dogs out. Chai did his business and as he was finishing 💩, he let out a huge yelp.

I thought maybe it was one of those (iykyk with these dogs) "I ate hair and now pooping it out is horrifying me" yelps, but i looked down and saw blood.

A grabbed a glove and paper towel and immediately found a sharp fragment sticking out of the 💩. I recognized it as part of a chew that our aussie had had.

Absolutely started panicking. I felt so dumb for not realizing she had bit off pieces and left them and he had gulped them down. I googled, which made me feel worse. He was otherwise acting fine but my anxiety was killing me so we called our vet's after hours number and our vet talked us through what we were seeing, what to do on the possibility that there were anymore fragments, and what to watch out for.

The vet strongly felt that the blood we saw had probably come only from a scrape as the fragment exited. Suggested we feed him some bread and pumpkin to cushion anything that could still be in his digestive track and encourage him to expel it. And of course basically told us if he wasn't acting himself to bring him in asap. The vet seemed more concerned with an obstruction situation than him getting grazed as it exited.

I could not sleep Thursday night I was so upset, mostly at myself. Obviously we took away the chews and will never ever have any type of dog chews in the house again that can break off into sharp shards! I just couldn't believe this happened.

The good news is that Friday afternoon, he took a huge poo and no blood and no evidence of anymore of the chew. Evening came and be had another and again, no blood and no chew remains. He has been his wild and cuddly self the entire time. I am so relieved but still feel 🫠 over the whole thing. Was absolutely terrified damage had been done or worse.

Anyway, this is my PSA to be very careful about chews and any other sharp objects... it is very scary when something like this happens.
