Hey Reddit,
Hoping this post can help relieve some anxiety mid-renovation. I just took possession of a 1974 home which required some extensive renovation (not currently moved in). Regrettably, I removed old floor tile (9x9, black mastic) by removing the subfloor in its entirety. Some come out in big pieces, while others ended up breaking into little chunks as the sub-floor itself came apart. I also took down some old drywall, but my understanding is that only the joint compound would be of concern (none was used in the bedroom + kitchen + closets as it was covered with panelling) so only really one wall to worry about.
I did spray everything down during removal, and wore a Tyvek suit along with a respirator the entire time.
I currently have a HEPA air purifier along with a HEPA air scrubber running, which I plan on running non-stop the next week. Additionally I’ve purchased the RIDGID RV2400HF HEPA vacuum which I plan on using to go over the house in its entirety next weekend, along with wet wiping every surface there is and mopping the floor. Lastly, I plan on installing a HEPA filter in the furnace as well as getting a duct cleaning once drywall is up (and redoing all the cleaning mentioned above after that).
Anyways, hoping that these next few steps will be enough to mitigate future risks, but would love some insight as currently spiralling but can’t afford to pay professionals. Picture attached to show the current state of the house and what we’re dealing with.
