Looking to grow

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice from people already established in the controls/BAS world.

Right now I’m doing installation work for Siemens in building automation/controls. Most of my experience is running wire, mounting devices, installing panels/controllers, and helping with field installs. I enjoy the industry and want to turn this into a long-term career, but I’m trying to figure out the best path to move into higher paying roles.

I’m interested in things like:
Controls programmer
Startup/commissioning tech
Systems specialist
PLC/industrial automation
Networking/OT
HVAC controls engineering
Project management eventually

I’m willing to go to school, get certifications, or self-study if it’s worth it. I’ve looked into things like:

Associate degrees in automation/electrical technology
PLC programming
Niagara/N4
Networking certs
HVAC knowledge
Programming basics

For those of you making good money in controls/automation:
What path gave you the biggest jump in pay?
What skills are most valuable right now?
Are certs worth it, or is experience king?
Would you stay in BAS or move toward industrial controls?
What would you do if you were starting over from install?
Any advice is appreciated. I’m trying to avoid staying stuck doing only install work forever and want to build toward a more technical/high-paying role.

Need advice

Currently I work in BMS/BAS installation, subcontracted mainly underneath Siemens and sometimes trane and daikin.

I really only do Installation and troubleshooting, no startup. I want to get into programming and maybe commissioning. Basically anything that will let me grow more in my knowledge in the trade to become more valuable. I’m open to going to school or getting certs just don’t know what to get. What’s your advice? Any other install guys out here that would like to share their story? Any advice helps. Thanks

Hey everyone, looking for some advice from people already established in the controls/automation field.
Right now I work in BMS installation on commercial construction sites. Most of my experience is installing controls devices, running wire, reading prints, mounting panels/devices, and helping bring systems together in the field. I enjoy the work and definitely want to stay in controls/automation long term, but I’m trying to figure out the smartest next move to increase my income and skill set over the next few years.
I’m interested in eventually getting into higher paying roles like:
PLC programming
Industrial automation
Controls engineering
System integration
Lead controls technician roles
Data centers / pharma / industrial facilities
For those of you who started in installation and moved up:
What skills helped you the most?
Should I focus on learning PLCs now or continue growing in BAS first?
Is an associate degree worth it, or are certifications/self-learning enough?
What software/programs should I start learning?
Are there specific industries that pay significantly better?
Any advice on avoiding getting stuck doing only install work long term?
I’m motivated to learn outside of work and willing to invest time into schooling/certs if it’s worth it. I’d appreciate any advice from people who’ve been through a similar path.
