Hi everyone,
I apologise if this isn’t the correct sub, but I’d really love the chance to hear from some Aussie nurses and hopefully get some advice.

I’m a 2nd year Bachelor of Science (environmental science) student, and I’m really struggling as I am not enjoying it, and I don’t think I will personally be able to build a career in this field.

I’ve had significant struggles with depression for 6 years, I am currently 21yo F, and find that I’m no longer able to apply myself in environmental science. I’ve come so far in my mental health journey, that I’ve finally accepted that I need to change my path. It’s taken a long time for me to accept that Enviro Sci isn’t for me.

I am really curious about nursing. I’ve always had a deep interest in the medical field, and one thing I’ve always been passionate about is helping others. However, due to my mental health I decided against pursuing nursing, as I thought it would impact my ability to be a good nurse.

Now I’m a bit older, I think I’ve realised that this may be my calling. My Grandma who passed in January 2025, who I was extremely close to, was an amazing nurse. My whole family, and my grandmothers friends, have always told me how similar I am to her, and I feel inside me that I have a purpose to help others, the way that my grandma did.

I think that I could make a great nurse, and that I could do a lot of good in this profession. The idea of helping people sparks a passion in me I haven’t felt in a while.

I’m just unsure if I should go for it, and change my career path or not. Because I know nursing isn’t easy, the pay isn’t great, and in my opinion, it is the definition of a thankless job. (You nurses are absolutely incredible humans, and I hope I have it in me to be as amazing as you are)

I would love to hear you guys’ advice if you have any for me, and if any nurses who have battled with severe depression like me want to share their experiences I would love that. In your guys’ opinions, would nursing be good for me? If you took the time to read, thank you so much.
