Is it difficult to get approved for an unpaid LOA? Mentally and physically burnt out.

Won’t go into detail for anonymity purposes, but I’m just completely burnt out mentally and even physically. I have 10000 competing priorities outside of work, and also only have < a year to finish my CPA. I feel like if I had the opportunity to just take a break, I can focus on the personal/familial tasks that are pulling my mind away from work, heal my burnout mentally and physically, and get done with my CPA which seems impossible to balance with a full time or reduced schedule. My heart just isn’t in it right now, which sucks because I was high performer who was driven to get involved in everything several months ago. I can’t approved for a full time leave with FMLA/STD, only a reduced schedule which I don’t think is enough.

I know that an unpaid leave is based on business need. Jw how hard it is to get approved? Is a bigger or smaller department more or less likely to approve? Is it impossible to get approved if it’s partially during your (extension) busy season? Can I request the full time then be countered for a lesser amount of time?

Thanks in advance.
