Hi all, I’ve been researching my great-great-grandfather, a Norwegian immigrant who arrived in North America in June 1861 and enlisted shortly after in the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

He trained at Camp Randall in Madison and served with Company B, the “Wergeland Guards,” a unit composed largely of Scandinavian immigrants. He was wounded in Georgia in 1864.

I’ve put together a detailed account of his timeline, including his departure from his home parish on April 13, 1861, his journey to the Midwest, and his service in the Union Army.
