Strange turn signal issues

I have an early 944 with showing some strange behavior regarding the turn signals which I’m hoping someone here might have a clue about.

They were working when I got the car but stopped shortly after. All the bulbs are new, and I replaced the turn signal relay. They worked for about 1-2 days, and now don’t. Engaging the stalk shows a solid green light in the gauge, but no signals.

I just got the car back together after doing a few things chasing a rough idol. I put on new silicone vacuum lines, and while I was in there I swapped the spark plugs and the intake manifold gaskets as well.

I did a couple of other minor things, but they seem unrelated to this issue, like O-rings on the oil separator, etc..

There’s a strange knocking sound now that was not there before. I did not touch the timing, I plugged the intake holes while I was working so I’m certain nothing fell in.

The idle seems fine and doesn’t sound like it’s misfiring (which in my mind rules out the plugs) and I double checked that the plug wires were correct. The 2 & 3 wires were the same length and I didn’t label them 🫠, but I’m following the 1, 3, 4, 2 order going clockwise, and like I said it does t feel like it’s misfiring.

Let me know if you’ve heard noise like this before!

I know it’s the Audi 2L but I’m hoping someone can help me identify what’s causing these scoring marks in that specific place. It’s only on cyl 4. Some backstory… car doesn’t run, had 0 compression in 1 of the cylinders (if I remember correctly I was told cyl 3). I had a spare head that I refurbished and will be swapping in.

Anyone here seen marks like this before?
