I need help choosing between two PhD offers in Computer Science. I’ve been a Lecturer for 3.5 years and want to finish PhD quickly to return to academia—ideally in a high-paying Gulf country or back home.
The Offers:
- Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Qatar
- QS Ranking: 244
- Pros: Better funding, ~4-year completion.
- Cons: People often dismiss it because it’s in the Middle East.
- University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), USA
- QS Ranking: 1200+
- Pros: "USA Brand" (people say "Wow" just hearing "Texas"), potential for US networking.
- Cons: Lower ranking, ~6-year completion, slightly lower funding.
The Dilemma: The "Global Brand Name" is confusing. Friends suggest the US for the name, but the ranking heavily favors HBKU.
My Goals:
- Finish the PhD quickly.
- Secure a high-paying Professor role in a Gulf country (UAE, Qatar, Saudi) or a top-tier position in my home country where people will value my PhD.
My Profile:
- B.Sc: 3.85 | M.Sc: 3.98
- Research: 5 Journals (Q2/Q3), 3 Conferences, 1 Book Chapter.
- Teaching: 3.5 years.
Most people are saying skip these both for this year and prepare better for the next intake and apply at some top universities in US, Australia and Europe.
My goal: Don't want to take significant pressure for PhD. Want to finish the PhD which will be valued by everyone.
