ID Help, WW1 or WW2? (Any info is appreciated)

This is my brother‘s, his thoughts are it‘s from WW1 but I‘m not exactly sure. It seems to be painted black. He was using it to hold legos and I couldn‘t let that happen, any info on the helmet or advise to get him to stop using it for a storage container is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I got it from my Grandfather‘s estate, he served from the late 60s-early 70s, is it from that era, earlier, or later?
