Are “player markets” a more interesting direction than traditional sports prediction markets?

Been thinking about how prediction markets could evolve beyond just yes/no match outcomes.

Football fans already naturally talk in market language:

  • “his stock is rising”
  • “buy low”
  • “overrated”
  • “future Ballon d’Or”
  • “washed”

So instead of betting on teams to win, what if users interacted with live player markets?

Example:

  • building portfolios around players before/during tournaments
  • player values changing dynamically based on form, hype, stats, injuries, discourse, etc.
  • communities reacting live to momentum swings
  • users gaining reputation for identifying undervalued players early

Feels closer to fantasy football + Football Manager + prediction markets combined.

Does this sound genuinely interesting/useful, or does it eventually collapse into regular sports betting anyway?

Are prediction markets more interesting when embedded into existing products/communities?

Not a typical prediction market post, but I’m curious whether prediction mechanics work better when embedded into existing behaviours rather than generic “betting markets”.

Some concepts I’ve been thinking about:

  • Attention markets → predicting what companies/topics gain momentum
  • Dynamic fantasy sports → player-specific live markets instead of team fantasy scoring
  • Social coordination markets → group chats/communities creating predictions/challenges together

For example, a football app where users build portfolios around player outcomes, form, hype, or tournament stats rather than traditional fantasy teams.

Does this direction actually make sense, or does it just become gambling with extra steps?

I studied classical studies at uni, but haven't looked at a book relating to it since I left (3 years ago), and I kinda miss it. Especially literature and philosophy. Anyone have any articles/book/ other written media they enjoy reading that helps them keep up with their knoweldge?
