S3E4 isn't a happy ending, it's two broken people choosing eternity for the wrong reasons
Kelly: She lived a long life by human standards (97 years). She was married for 49 years before her husband passed away, and she also lost her only daughter at the age of 39. She watched her husband refuse the second life due to his religious beliefs, as he wished to be reunited with their daughter in death, and because their daughter herself had also chosen not to accept eternal life. After 97 years of living, she came to realize that eternity is not a desirable thing at all.
Yorkie: She was born into a strict religious family (the Amish) and realized she was attracted to girls. When she opened up to her family about her orientation, they rejected her, calling it unnatural. She fled in a car, got into a traffic accident, and was left quadriplegic and unable to speak at the age of 21. From that point on, her entire existence was reduced to staring at a ceiling for most of the week, waiting eagerly for the few hours she was allowed to enter the second world — only 5 hours a day. She never got to experience life beyond the age of 21, simply trapped between a ceiling, her own thoughts, and memories that never extended past that age.
for me: it is a sad ending because eternity is not a good thing. You can only say that after looking at Kelly's life. Even if we say they will remain happy for 100, 1,000, or even 10,000 years which is already impossible after all those years, won't they eventually feel bored and start to hate life? Just like Kelly, who only accepted eternal life for Yorkie's sake, and Yorkie, who had her life taken from her and as a result desperately wanted to live.
