Hi r/troy,

My partner and I are relocating to the Troy/Albany area for work this year after living in Georgia for about 10 years, and we're excited but a little nervous about the change since we've gotten pretty used to Southern living. We've already signed a lease on the Brunswick side of town, so we're set on housing, but hoping to tap into some local wisdom on everything else.

A few things we'd love input on:

  • General thoughts on the area, what it's like to live around there, and any safety-related things to keep in mind as newcomers
  • An honest reality check on winter and how to prep, since this will be our first real one
  • What you love about living in the Troy area, and anything you wish someone had told you before moving
  • How is the internet in the area generally? Our apartment includes bulk Spectrum at 600 Mbps, and we're curious how Spectrum performs and whether upgrading to 1 Gbps is typically an option
  • A rough sense of what power and gas bills combined run per month for a typical apartment, especially in winter
  • Recommendations for reliable local movers to help with unloading, since we're using PODS
  • Tips on gardening and houseplants in the climate up there, since I had a lot of plants back in Atlanta
  • Indian grocery stores and restaurants, plus general restaurant favorites or hidden gems

Any other tips or honest "watch out for this" advice would be great too.

Thanks in advance!
