This might be a hot take, but I honestly think Carlos Prates is the best striker at welterweight right now.

I don’t see Jack Della Maddalena beating him. Prates matches up really well against southpaws (like Geoff Neal and Leon Edwards), and he also does very well against boxers who tend to be more planted and don’t check kicks consistently. In open stance, he’s very effective at attacking the lead leg and breaking opponents down over time.

In my opinion, the way to beat Prates is similar to what Ian Garry did: he kept moving nonstop, used head kicks to keep Prates cautious and even wear out his left hand, took away his confidence in his power, and mixed in wrestling as much as possible. Garry is basically a perfect antistyle for Prates (obviously Makhachev too).

You also can’t really compare their experience. Prates fought Dave Leduc in Muay Thai, scored a flashdown, and even though he lost the decision, he had a solid performance.

Meanwhile, JDM had a very close fight with Kevin Holland, who is clearly a level below Prates in striking.

Of course, anything can happen in a fight especially in striking (just look at Cro Cop vs Gabriel Gonzaga). But saying JDM is the better striker, in my opinion, is just delusional.
