I want to do anodization! Any advices?

Hey guys,

I’ve been making some small aluminum parts recently. A friend told me anodizing would make them look way more like real finished parts, so now I’m tempted to try doing it at home.

Before I buy a bunch of stuff, I saw CASWELL, I figured I’d ask people who actually know machining and finishing:

Is home anodizing small aluminum parts worth the trouble?

Anyone used CASWELL kit before?

Or is this one of those things where I should just send parts out and not overthink it?

I’m mostly talking about small brackets, knobs, mounts, and prototype parts — nothing huge.

Thinking about anodizing this flashlight body, good idea or not? Need advices.

Hey guys,

I have this flashlight and I’ve been thinking about making the outside look a bit nicer.

A friend told me anodizing could be a good option, but I don’t have much experience with it, so I wanted to ask here before doing anything stupid.

For flashlight bodies, do you guys think anodizing is actually worth it?

Does it hold up well after carrying and using it for a while, or would raw/stonewashed metal be a better choice?

I’m mostly trying to make it look cleaner and more “finished”, not super flashy.

Thanks.

Is home anodizing aluminum actually worth the trouble?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking into home anodizing for small aluminum parts, and I’m trying to understand whether it’s actually worth doing at home.

I know the basic process and I saw many videos online. Ideally good, but I’m not sure how repeatable or practical it is in a normal home workshop.

For people who have tried it:

  1. Was it worth the effort compared with sending parts out?
  2. What was the hardest part to get right?
  3. Were your results consistent enough to use on real projects, or more like experiments?
  4. How much space and tank volume did your setup need?
  5. What safety or waste-handling issues should beginners pay attention to?

I’m mostly thinking about small aluminum parts, not large industrial pieces.

Would love to hear both good and bad experiences.

How do you usually finish small aluminum CNC parts after machining?

Hey everyone, I’ve been making a few small aluminum parts recently.

One thing I’m still not happy with is the finish. After machining and deburring, the parts work fine, but they still kind of look like “shop parts” instead of finished parts, I want to make them look better or more professional. What do you usually do at that point?

One of my friends told me anodization is a good way, and send me the picture above, I don't have any experience about this, so I am trying to ask some advices here.
