how do you guys actually verify a car's history before buying?

a friend of mine recently got stuck with a car that had two undisclosed accidents. looked fine, drove fine, seller seemed honest. only found out after the fact and by then the damage was done — repairs plus tanked resale value.
i've started checking VIN history before even going to a test drive. curious if this is common practice here or if most people just trust the seller and hope for the best.
