Tee times during golf league night

Yesterday my son and I decided to get in 18 holes after I got off work. He found several open tee times at a course not too far from home that we'd never played before. We got there about 20 minutes ahead of our tee time and the parking lot was fairly empty. I checked in and paid and they were uncertain which side of the course to send us off. There was nobody on either the 1st or 10th tees. Looked wide open. They talked about it for a second and then said we should go off the back 9 because a league was starting at 5:00. We might have to wait a bit at the turn. OK, no problem. I was playing the best round I've ever played and shot a 44 on the front 9 (I'm a newer golfer, this is the start of my 3rd season). We hit the turn and there were at least 7 pairs of league golfers waiting at the first tee. One group was teeing off on the back 9 we just played. I went into the clubhouse and asked why they sent us off the back 9 and he got incredulous saying, "There are 2 leagues playing, what are we supposed to do? You can play the back 9 again if you want." All I wanted to do was continue playing after my best front 9 ever but I was basically forced to play the same 9 I just played. Could we have done anything differently? Did the course handle this correctly? There were several more tee times after the one we chose. Why didn't they just block off the tee times online if they had 2 leagues starting an hour after we started playing?
