Recently a position became vacant in my branch. During a workplace social I heard from the manager of that unit that they likely would not run a competition but instead fill the spot via direct assignment.
I support this unit fairly regularly when they need extra hands on deck and have enjoyed the work so far. I'm not entirely knowledgable on how people are chosen for direct assignments but I am interested in the role and want to know how I can be a contender for the position.
Should I email the unit manager to ask to chat and bring this to their attention this way? What would be some good questions to ask? Is there anything else I may not have considered?
