Tech companies brag 'sustainable' but planned obsolescence never stopped

Every time a new phone or laptop drops there’s always that part in the presentation talking about recycled materials, smaller packaging, carbon neutral this, eco-friendly that, and yeah it sounds good on paper but at the same time nothing really changed where it matters.

Devices still get harder to repair, parts are harder to replace, batteries are glued in, software support quietly drops after a few years, and suddenly something that still works “fine” starts feeling slow or unsupported.

It’s like sustainability is being marketed more than it’s actually being practiced, because if these companies really wanted to reduce waste, they’d make devices easier to repair and last longer without forcing upgrades, instead it feels like you’re being nudged to replace your device every few years while being told it’s all part of a greener future

Idk, just feels a bit off to hear “sustainable” and “upgrade cycle” in the same conversation, anyone else feel this or am i just being too cynical about it?

Favorite extinct OS sound: Win95 startup or XP logoff?

Which one do you guys remember more, the windows 95 startup or the xp logoff sound, both are super nostalgic in different ways, but they hit differently depending on what you grew up with

For me it’s the XP logoff, that sound just feels more familiar and kinda satisfying

Which one do you pick?

Phone case corners turn yellow in exactly 2 months

Clear silicone cases are actually a scam at this point 😭I’m using a clear case on my 16 plus and the corners always turn yellow after like 2 months, no matter what, the back still looks fine but the sides just get that ugly yellow tint out of nowhere

I don’t even do anything crazy, just normal use, and it still happens every time, I’m not really into casetify or anything flashy either, I just want a simple clear case that actually stays clear

Do those even exist or is yellowing just unavoidable?

Do you keep a "tech graveyard" drawer full of dead gadgets?"

I just realized i basically have a whole drawer of dead tech at this point, there’s my old broken gameboy, a samsung j7 prime, and even a galaxy tablet just sitting there doing nothing lol, they don’t work anymore (or barely do), but for some reason I still keep them instead of throwing them out

Part of it is nostalgia, part of it is “maybe i can still fix this someday” but realistically they’ve just been sitting there for years lol. Does anyone else have a drawer like this or is it just me?

Should AI art generators credit original artists, or is inspiration fair game?

I’ve been seeing a lot of debate around ai art lately and I’m kinda stuck in the middle on this, on one hand, these tools are trained on tons of existing artwork, so it feels like there should be some kind of credit or acknowledgment to the original artists

But the same time, people argue it’s just “inspiration” or similar to how artists learn from references, not really sure where the line should be drawn

Should there be credit given, or is this just how creative tools evolve? what do you guys think about it

Deepfakes should be banned

Someone close to me almost got scammed because of a deepfake video and it’s honestly unsettling how real it looked

It wasn’t some obvious fake either, it looked like someone they actually knew, voice and face matched enough that you’d believe it at first glance, that’s what makes it scary, not just the tech itself but how easy it is to use it in a convincing way. Before this I just saw deepfakes as something interesting or even entertaining in some cases, but now it feels way more serious

It’s one thing when it’s used for jokes or content, but when it starts being used to trick people and scam them, that’s a different story…feels like this kind of thing can get out of hand fast if there aren’t proper limits

Anyone else worried about where this is heading or am I overreacting?

Is a standing desk converter worth the desk space?

I’m thinking about getting a standing desk converter since I mostly work from home now and only go to the office once a week, the idea sounds good, like being able to switch between sitting and standing without replacing my whole desk, but every setup I see makes it look kinda bulky and like it takes over the desk

I already have a monitor + laptop setup so I’m not sure if it’ll just end up feeling cramped, I don’t wanna buy one and then realize it’s just in the way most of the time

Anyone here using one long term? Did it actually improve your setup or nah?

What's your favorite dead tech floppy disks, CDs, or VHS?

I’d go with cds just because i used them a lot for music and burning files back then, it felt more personal compared to just streaming now

Floppies are cool in a nostalgic way but I barely used them, and vhs reminds me more of watching movies growing up, funny how all of these used to be normal and now they’re basically gone

What about you? Which one do you actually have memories with?

Monitor height eye level or slight downward gaze?

I've been trying to fix my desk setup lately and I’m stuck on monitor height, whether it should be exactly at eye level or slightly below

I’ve got a bad lower back so I’ve been paying more attention to posture, and I noticed small adjustments actually make a difference over long hours, sometimes eye level feels right, but other times a slight downward gaze feels more natural and less straining

Not sure if it’s just preference or if there’s an actual “correct” setup, curious how you guys have yours set up, eye level or slightly below? What ended up working better for you long term?
