TIL Biddy Mason (1818-1891) came to California as a slave in 1851. She won her freedom in court and became one of the first black women to own land in Los Angeles. As the city grew the value of her land skyrocketed and Biddy became a very wealthy woman and prominent philanthropist.

What are your thoughts on international sporting events held in host countries and cities that vary by year (like the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup)?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup starts next month. When I was a kid I used to be interested in the Olympics and the world cup despite not being into sports. For some reason I was interested in the planning and the organization of the events (I think it was because for a long time I wanted to be an architect so it was cool reading about the new infrastructure being built). I used to get kind of excited by the bidding process to host the Olympics or the World Cup. But I also learned that this process has a lot of issues (the costs of bidding often dwarf any economic benefits from the event and the bidding process can be corrupt) and it isn't always a good thing to be awarded an international sports competition (in doing research I found out Denver was awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics but rejected it). I saw someone suggest in a Youtube comment that they should just have an "Olympic Island" where they host all the Olympics so they don't mess up any other cities. Although I admit their argument has logic, I don't like it because I like the idea of these sporting events being hosted in different places as it gives these cities and countries a moment to shine every 4 years.

I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this that still allows different places to host these events. The only other options I can think of are randomly or for the World Cup (you couldn't really do it for a multi-sport event like the Olympics) have what ever country wins the competition get to host the next one like what they do with Eurovision?

What do you think? How should these international sporting events be planned?

What's a cultural export most people don't know comes from your country?

I just learned that Pingu a show I grew up watching was originally created in Switzerland. It was the first example I had heard of any sort of cultural property coming from Switzerland and I didn't realize it was this show I loved as a kid.

What are some cultural exports people might not be aware came from your country?

TIL about the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster. On December 19, 1981 the cargo vessel MV Union Star suffered engine failure in heavy seas off the coast of Cornwall and the lifeboat RNLB Solomon Browne went to her rescue. All sixteen people (eight on each ship) perished.

I worked hard on my blog and posted the first three posts all at once. But the name was something of an afterthought. I just combined a personal title with my middle name. But later when I tried searching for my blog I realized there was a Youtube channel with almost the exact same name as my blog. So now I need to pick a new name. How do you pick a memorable name that's also unique?
