Before I make a big fuss and run screaming to my registrar or the dean of my school, I want to ask you teachers if I'm allowed to be upset about this. I just feel like I did exactly what she asked, and then she just changed the assignment after it was graded. Am I wrong or right?

(because i can't post photos for whatever reason, this is an exact copy and paste)

Your Answer:

The Count of Monte Cristo play is based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, which was published in 1844. The story is about Edmond Dantes, a young sailor who gets falsely accused of treason and thrown in prison even though he didn’t do anything wrong. After years of being locked up, he escapes, finds a hidden treasure, and comes back as this rich, mysterious guy called the Count of Monte Cristo to get revenge on the people who betrayed him.

The play version is basically a shorter, more focused version of the story made for the stage. Since the original book is super long and complicated, the play mostly sticks to the main storyline. His betrayal, his time in prison, and then his revenge. A lot of the extra details and side characters are either cut out or simplified so the audience can follow it more easily.

In the larger text, the purpose of The Count of Monte Cristo is to explore themes like revenge, justice, and identity. At first, Dantes thinks he’s doing the right thing by punishing the people who hurt him, almost like he’s acting as a form of justice. But as things go on, it becomes clear that revenge isn’t as satisfying or "right" as he thought. It starts to hurt innocent people too, and he kind of loses himself in the process. The play highlights the main idea of the story: what happens when someone tries to take justice into their own hands. It shows that revenge can spiral out of control and raises the question of whether Dantes is really justified, or if he’s gone too far.

Teacher Response:

This question is meant for you to think about the way. This particular play affects James Tyrone, who purchased it, and by virtue of his relationship to other family members, their lives. So you have not given me the information I expected.
