Ali Musaliyar was born with a connection to the Hejaz region coming from a family of brave travelers who brought Islam to the Malabar coast. His ancestors were known for their lineage and after spending years in Makkah he returned to Tirurangadi as a knowledgeable leader. He had a people, the Mappilas with a mix of local blood, who were merchants, thinkers and warriors. They had features and unshakeable faith showing their noble roots.
When the British disrespected his people in 1921 Ali Musaliyar stood up with confidence. He organized the Mappila volunteers into a disciplined group, like the early Islamic armies. They defied the British Empires power during the Tirurangadi siege. Ali Musaliyar stood on the mosque steps wearing robes that fluttered like a flag. He showed the forces that the Mappilas were not just ordinary people but proud and brave descendants of noble tribes. They would only bow to God.
Ali Musaliyar was. Eventually martyred in 1922. But his story didn't end there; it became legendary. He faced the firing squad with courage like the great martyrs of Arabia. This showed that the spirit of the desert couldn't be broken by power.
Today Ali Musaliyar is remembered as the Lion of Malabar. He reminded his people that their heritage came from Arabia and their courage came from the kings of the East.
