My family owns a small franchise convenience store in the Terrebonne area (Quebec). We’ve been trying to find someone to take it over for about a year now, with no luck. We’re starting to feel stuck and I’m hoping people here can share their experience or point me in the right direction.
A few things making this complicated:
• The franchise agreement and the commercial lease both add layers (any new operator has to be approved by the landlord, which is a slow process)
• We’ve thought about offering flexible payment terms to a new operator, but if they stop paying and we have to take the store back, re-qualifying with the landlord could take months
• Just closing the doors feels like the worst outcome because of what we’d still owe on the lease and franchise side
• We don’t really know what the realistic options look like at this point
If anyone here has been through transitioning out of a franchise convenience store (especially in Quebec), I would really appreciate hearing what worked, what didn’t, and who you talked to for help — broker, lawyer, accountant, the franchisor itself, etc.
Not looking to promote anything, just genuinely trying to figure out the right next step for my family. Merci.
