Vic: Can a rooming house charge a “weekend move-in fee”?
Hi all,
I’m in Melbourne and was recently approved for a room in a rooming house (haven’t signed anything or paid bond/rent yet).
The operator asked me to confirm my move-in date so they can prepare the agreement. In their email, they also stated:
“Please note that if a move-in is arranged on a weekend, an additional $50 fee applies, and a further $100 surcharge applies for handovers after 6pm.”
Is this allowed, and what would be the best way to respond?
Personally, I think charging an extra $50 just because the move-in is on a weekend is unfair. I work Monday to Friday in an office, so moving in on a weekday would mean taking time off work and losing wages.
If anyone has had an experience with this I appreciate your input!
