I am a second year student on a 4 week acute placement in a rural setting. Just this week, I’ve been left alone with the whole hospital (8 patients, but still) and not known where either of my buddy RNs were, been left out of skills, not been taken or allowed to administer meds, not been allowed with my buddy nurses when they’re in ED treating patients and today they asked me to shower a patient and in the 10 minutes I was in the shower they’d done an infusion they promised I could do.
These experiences all happened with the same two nurses (I have had one shift with other nurses who were absolutely amazing). I’ve truly felt like I’m missing out on actually learning and developing my nursing skills.
I’m absolutely okay with having to advocate for my own education every now and again but it’s frustrating constantly feeling unwanted and fighting to even take a set of obs.
I’m really just not sure what to do or where to go from here, especially being a rural setting (tiny) I’m hesitant to report anything. I’ve got three weeks left, and I’m ready to just end the placement early and take the fail.
