Im currently an incoming JD at uOttawa planning my strategy for the Toronto Big Law recruit. I know that grades are the ultimate king and the biggest gatekeeper for OCIs, but I’m curious about the "holistic" part of the application.

For those of us who are K-JDs (straight from undergrad), our resumes usually consist of:

  • Part-time retail or service jobs.
  • Undergrad research assistantships.
  • Exec roles in campus clubs.
  • Maybe a generic 1L summer law job if we're lucky.

My question is: In today’s hyper-competitive market, how much of a disadvantage is it to have zero "corporate" or "full time professional" experience before law school?

For those who landed Big Law in the 1L and 2L recruit without a corporate background:

  1. How did you frame your "unrelated" experience to appeal to firms?
  2. Aside from the GPA, what was the one thing on your resume that you think caught their eye?
  3. How much does networking (coffee chats) bridge the gap for someone with a "thin" professional history?

I'd love to hear from current 2Ls or even 1Ls that secured roles in the 1L recruit. Thanks!
