Im currently an incoming JD at uOttawa planning my strategy for the Toronto Big Law recruit. I know that grades are the ultimate king and the biggest gatekeeper for OCIs, but I’m curious about the "holistic" part of the application.
For those of us who are K-JDs (straight from undergrad), our resumes usually consist of:
- Part-time retail or service jobs.
- Undergrad research assistantships.
- Exec roles in campus clubs.
- Maybe a generic 1L summer law job if we're lucky.
My question is: In today’s hyper-competitive market, how much of a disadvantage is it to have zero "corporate" or "full time professional" experience before law school?
For those who landed Big Law in the 1L and 2L recruit without a corporate background:
- How did you frame your "unrelated" experience to appeal to firms?
- Aside from the GPA, what was the one thing on your resume that you think caught their eye?
- How much does networking (coffee chats) bridge the gap for someone with a "thin" professional history?
I'd love to hear from current 2Ls or even 1Ls that secured roles in the 1L recruit. Thanks!
