Dug out and Transplanted the large Japanese maple I’ve named her Sansa

*** edit *** we took off the soil and mulch to allow for the root flare to be exposed will update with a pic tomorrow … it’s too dark right now and I need a drink! ****

We finally got her moved. She looks happy, time will tell if she stays that way. In addition to the dirt and root ball we added Japanese maple fertilizer, 8 huge bags of soil and 10 bags of mulch.. and lots and lots of water

Got the all the rootsbthat are not under the concrete exposed, new hole is dug. Move is happening tomorrow and it will rain tomorrow night. Perfect timing (hopefully) I’ll keep on updating as we move along. Wish us luck.

If you want to see my previous posts to catch up cool…
We got all of the dead bushes out, found some more in the back. All the kids helped this weekend.
Gonna plant something else in these spots or put some kind of statue maybe I don’t know yet.
Ran into an issue with the 2 maple trees that are planted close to the house, (we did not plant them there). The one Blood Good is touching the house and will get far bigger so we are going to transplant it to another location we also have a crimson queen that will need to be transplanted as well. We will be using the experience and expertise of a cultivar in our area so we don’t damage or kill them.
They will be placed in spots more suitable for their height and width.
We also bought 4 new maples a Ryusen Weeping it will go in the spot of the Bloodgood, a Beni Schishenge, a Moonrise, and an Arakawa (we got that because of the bark that will come in. Figuring out the placement for those last 3.
Tomorrow we will be planting the bulbs in the flower beds and doing some more weed clean up.

If your just tuning in here is day 1 and 2

Day 1

https://www.reddit.com/r/landscaping/s/nHFdvMVYjG

Day 2

https://www.reddit.com/r/landscaping/s/HWri5j0dUv

Day 3 Update:

Found some garden friends and got to work

It rained quite a bit today—but honestly, we needed it, so I’m not complaining. I’m also taking advantage of the wet soil and softened clay to tackle some of the tougher areas.

Focus is on the right side of the driveway today

With that in mind, we removed several dead trees. Some were affected by blight, others didn’t survive the intense freeze earlier this year, and a few were unfortunately overtaken by the weed issue.

Our daughter joined in on the fun, and together we were able to clear most of the weeds from several flower beds. There’s still one stubborn bed left to tackle, along with some lingering challenges like deep blackberry roots and persistent patches of tough grass.

We’re planning to plant a variety of mixed bulbs in these beds to create a vibrant, full flower garden.

I’ve also taken photos of the diseased and dead trees that are still standing—they’ll be completely removed, stumps and all, later this week. I’ll be sharing some of my flowers as well. I’ve decided to relocate the peonies because they’re a bit hidden right now, and I want them front and center where they can really shine.

We’ll also be replacing the large arborvitaes with smaller ones we recently purchased, and planting a peach tree we rescued that was in distress.

It looks like it’s about to rain again, so I might be done for the day… or maybe not. We’ll see how I feel later!

This is an update from my last post

https://www.reddit.com/r/landscaping/s/nHFdvMVYjG

My husband and I are fully committed to this project—not just completing it, but maintaining it long-term. Despite the rain today, we were still able to make solid progress. I’d estimate that about 80–85% of the weeding in our main focus area is now complete, and I can finally see the juniper again.

The rock path is now mostly clear, though there are still some stubborn weeds in the runoff areas, along the stairs, on the platforms, around the fountain, and within the bushes and juniper. We did have to remove a few plants and shrubs that were unfortunately being overtaken by the weeds.

I also installed the light trellises today—flowers will be added to those soon. The steps are nearly cleared, and we removed several very large bushes near the front of the house that were negatively affecting a peach tree and a dwarf Japanese maple.

Overall, I’m really happy with the progress so far—especially considering this is just day one. With rain expected over the next few days, I’m hoping to get outside whenever possible to keep working on clearing out the remaining weeds.

That’s all for now—more updates coming tomorrow, hopefully

We bought this beautiful house almost 2 years ago because we fell in love with the yard. There is no lawn just lush bushes, shrubs, fruit trees, various flowers plants veggies etc.

almost 2 acres of continuous beauty. There’s even a boardwalk to get around the yard.

Our landscaper and his crew canceled (he also canceled on others we know.. I hope he’s is ok) and the quotes we got from others are just outrageous… like thousands per month outrageous. So we decided to to it on our own… it’s a lot but I think it’ll be worth it as we are taking our time and making sure we uncover all the potential it has and find what these out of control vines and weeds are hiding.

I’ll document my journey little by little.

Starting with the front outside of our gate, it felt so pathetic compared to the rest of the yard so we added some evergreens and some potted plants that we can move inside for winter.

We will be adding more mulch, just waiting for it to be delivered

There are 2 bushes that were there we are pulling out, just trying to figure out what to put there. Any suggestions will help.

We planted some dwarf golden mops, Dänica arborvitae and some yucca. In the pots we placed a simple topiary with some hydrangeas and some Swedish Ivy

Attaching the before and after.

Then we will move onto the front area near our front fountain that has overgrown so much the weeds are strangling the juniper, and many other plants in the area.

We are adding some trellises with lights to the walkway

Only before pics on that one until the next post.

Once that’s done we will move to a little higher up in the yard

Til the next time!
