My 7Ib, almost-2 year old Shih Tzu has had diarrhea and pooping blood for a week. When I first noticed the blood last week I took him to urgent care and they gave him meds for diarrhea, stool firming, and nausea/appetite. They also administered some some kind of hydration fluid under his skin. I can’t say that helped too much but he was always in good spirits and playful.
2 days ago I started giving him FortiFlora probiotics in his food (Hill’s Science Diet chicken stew) and he seemed to finally be making an improvement. Stool started looking solid and didn’t see any blood. This morning however he woke me up barking because he had to poop and it was back to the red, jelly-like mucous poop. Mainly mucus, no poop really. He went multiple times in the span of an hour— one of which was dripping out his butt as he ran to the mat. He’s also vomited about 3 times today.
He hasn’t been himself today. Mostly sleeping all day. Not really eating though he’s already finicky with eating throughout the day. He did have a few blueberries.
Any thoughts what this could be? Is it bad and is there a fix?
I do plan on taking him to the vet after work but would like some possible answers in the meantime.
