With everyone always talking about him behind his back at school, Imagine if he spent his free time wearing his invisibility cloak and waiting for someone to start talking bad about him. Pops out of no where “hey guys what you talking about?!”

Not only would it add to his aura of mystery but it would have highly discouraged people from gossiping about him all the time if he was a kind of Beetlejuice figure who appeared when you say his name.
