False grade inflation throughout semester
Hi guys! I have no idea how to word this, but I just finished up a semester long course and received my final grade. Initially when looking at it, I thought it was a little low. My professor did a thing where in Canvas, he made separate categories to input our overall averages, and he used those to calculate our final grade. For instance, there was one category for exams, one for the final exam, one for quizzes, etc. I was confused, because on Canvas, there were different values shown in the percentages Canvas automatically calculated (the automated values at the bottom). After emailing my professor back and forth, i figured out the grades shown in Canvas had not truly been representative and had been inflated by 2-3 percent. I know this is most likely my fault for not reading the syllabus clearly, but I also do remember multiple students (not just me) asking the professor if Canvas was representative of the syllabus since the syllabus was a little confusing, and he said yes every time. He also told me in an email that he had updated Canvas to be representative of the syllabus. I just wish I had known that my grade was higher than what it really was before going into the final because I think that would’ve changed how much effort I allocated to that class versus my other ones.
