2008 328xi, N51, 205k miles

First I was having a "CLOSE GAS CAP" message on the dash, then a SES with a 2A16 code, EVAP fine leak (I think it was that one).

I replaced the gas cap, didn't help. Then I smoke tested and it turns out the vent hose that goes from the top of the fill neck down to the top of the gas tank was completely disconnected. So I reconnected that. And now the gas cap message and code have not returned which they would have by now.

The strange thing is that trying to run the DMTL test from ISTA, it starts running and within 2-3 minutes, it aborts the test saying it was canceled because I started fueling the vehicle (like pumping gas into it??) which of course I wasn't doing. Further runs of the test are the same.

While the code is fixed, I'm no longer able to fill the gas tank, it won't go past half and it's trying to spew out the fill. Before fixing that vent pipe, I could fill up at full pump speed no problem. I never top off either.

I checked the charcoal canister and it doesn't seem like there's any gas or anything in it, I turned it over and over and shook it upside down. The hose connectors on it are bone dry.

Any suggestions here?

For awhile I had a DMTL fine leak code, I forget which one, I think it was 2A19. The car would put the "CLOSE GAS CAP" message on the dash and then awhile later throw the SES light and have the code.

So I replaced the gas cap as the first step, didn't help.

Then I smoke tested the system plugging in the smoke at the purge valve hose under the throttle body. Smoke was showing in the passenger side rear wheel well. So I pulled the liner out and found the large corrugated vent hose that goes from the side of the fill neck down to the gas tank was just completely disconnected. Since fixing that, the code has not reoccurred.

However now, I can't fill the tank with gas. The handle starts clicking off about 1/2 tank and I can only cajole a tiny bit more in by fiddling with the nozzle position and pumping super slow. A bit past half and no matter what fill rate, it's trying to come out the neck.

So this wasn't a problem before, I could fill up the tank full pump rate.

Any suggestions on where to chase this rabbit next?
