I thought I already learned all the really practical info for this situation after 2 years. But it turns out there's always more.

About a year ago or so my vet had sent home my dog with a prefilled syringe of liquid diazepam as a rescue medication in case he goes into status/has a long one/etc.

Well I just learned that Diazepam apparently becomes much less effective if it's left in a plastic syringe. The vet who gave it to me did not give me any special instructions, this was not during a cluster and only intended to be used over the next day etc. I wasn't exactly expecting a year old medication to be perfectly effective - I've gotten multiple doses over time - but to be clear it starts to degrade almost 24 hours after it's loaded in.

They also charged me like $100 for it. Not that the price particularly matters, but when you learn you threw $100 away for what was supposed to be peace of mind in the worse case scenario, it's certainly a compounded frustration. Especially also because I've read that you can get it prescribed for a quarter of that price from a real pharmacy, but that's tbd tomorrow when I make some calls.

So just sharing in case anyone else has a vet that's done this. My primary vets were especially horrible at handling this situation from the beginning though so it's not actually that surprising. I mean they very strongly encouraged me to euthanize my 2 yr old cattle dog mix after his second seizure when blood work came back clear because "he probably had brain cancer."
