After getting pre-approved I’m finally on the hunt for my very first house (granted on a tight budget). I can rant and go on about this garbage housing market for hours, but that’s not what’s bugging me tonight. I had my very first house showing, I was already pretty hesitant because I knew the place is split into two “units” for renting. I wasn’t told a whole lot, my husband is handling most of the communication, but I assumed maybe it was just the top unit being rented and I knew there were tenants, but I also thought maybe they’d been informed of the place being sold. We don’t want to be landlords, so IF we maybe really wanted this place we were definitely going to have to figure something out. Knowing it was being rented out made me not want it to begin with, but my husband insisted we look.
We get there with our realtor and the current landlord/owner was there to show us around. This is when I find out both units are currently rented and they’ve been there AWHILE. Also they have NO IDEA the owner is selling despite it being on the market for months and weren’t told about a showing today. It was so uncomfortable barging in on their home like that. The downstairs unit was this sweet elderly couple that reminded me so much of my grandparents and they were very confused and asked “is he selling the place?” And idk the whole thing made me feel so…icky. I’m an insanely empathetic person and I just kept feeling so so bad for interrupting their night and looking around and feeling intrusive. I know I would absolutely hate being in that position. Their rent is also only like $700 which is hard to come by these days, and the lady seemed to have health issues. God it just made me feel so awful.
Upstairs was this whole family with like 4 cats and I could tell they were nervous too. And I also felt bad about intruding on them. The whole thing just made me feel so gross and gave me this pit in my stomach. God I hope if someone buys the property they don’t screw over those families.
