My high school math teacher was just a genuinely easy going person. Always had something kind to say to his students and it never felt forced.
In my country it's pretty common for teachers to compare students or rank them in front of the class. It's just kind of normal here. But he never did that. Instead he'd find something specific to compliment about each person. Not generic stuff, actually specific things he noticed.
I watched that man quietly build up kids who had basically been told their whole school life that they weren't smart enough. A few words here and there, nothing dramatic, just consistent and genuine. You could see it change how some of them carried themselves over the year.
I don't think he ever realized how much it meant to people. Teachers like that probably never do. But I still think about him whenever I catch myself about to say something that could tear someone down instead of lift them up.
Sometimes the people who impact you most aren't trying to change your life. They're just being decent consistently and that alone is enough.
