Studying abroad for a year in Perth/Sydney

Hey everyone,

I'm a Computer Science undergrad from Germany, and I'm planning to study abroad in Australia for a full year (starting Feb 2026 for 2 semesters). I’ve managed to narrow my options down to two universities, but I’m completely torn and could really use some local insight!

My Options:

  1. Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth
  2. Western Sydney University (WSU) in Sydney

I really want that classic Aussie beach feeling, but I also want a proper city life where I can go out, party, and meet people on the weekends.

My dilemma is:

ECU (Perth): I’ve heard ECU is an absolute powerhouse for Cyber Security and the beaches in Perth are incredibly close. But I often hear Perth being called "Wait A While". Is it too quiet for a 20 year old looking for city life and nightlife over a full year?

WSU (Sydney): Sydney is obviously the ultimate tech/cloud hub (AWS, Google, etc. are right there) and the city life/partying is unmatched. However, I know WSU campuses are mostly out West. Is the commute to the beach going to ruin the "living by the ocean" vibe I'm hoping for?

If anyone has studied at these unis, works in the local tech industry, or can just give me a reality check on the Perth vs. Sydney lifestyle for a student, I’d be super grateful! Cheers!
