This weekend I finally had a Vesper prepared with Cocchi Americano (rather than Lillet Blanc), as often recommended by those who claim it’s closer to the original Kina Lillet. While I enjoyed it, I have to say it’s a markedly different drink with the Cocchi and that I prefer it with the Lillet Blanc.

There was a “warm” aspect that the Cocchi brought that reminded me of baking spices. On its own I liked it, but it felt out of place in what my brain thinks/anticipates a drink like the Vesper should be. I think it might pair better with something like bourbon (though I usually don’t care for fortified wine/bourbon pairings).

The Cocchi also didn’t strike me as noticeably more bitter than the Lillet, and the drink overall seemed sweeter than those I’ve had before. The only other difference that I can cite is the use of Tanqueray rather than my usual Gordon’s. The ratios are unknown in this case.

All in all, worth trying, but I’ll stick with Lillet.
