High-stakes, thought provoking speculative fiction with some slice of life and good characters ?
Hi fellow book lovers, after going through a massive streak of great fictions (that's what you get when you read Le Guin, Susanna Clarke and Ted Chiang back to back), I'm looking for the next one 😊
I like the kind of story telling that is calm and whimsical, can also be cold/factual if it's to explain world building. Multi-dimensional characters with no bullshit who spend a lot of time pondering things. I guess high stakes because it forces characters to think and make choices, I'm not necessarily looking for adventures/banter. I'm also drawn to weird socio-political world buildings. (Sorry if this is all over the place)
Some favourites that I want more of:
- Brave new world
- A lot of Le Guin (esp. Dispossessed, Tombs of Atuan....)
- Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
- Piranesi / A short stay in hell
- A lot of Ted Chiang
- Hyperion (more like the 1st and less like the 2nd, I have a hard time with space opera)
- Monk and robot (this one was not high stakes enough but loved the solo road trip part)
- I have a soft spot for polish and soviet fictions after reading a lot when I was younger but without knowing/remembering the titles, so please don't hesitate to throw in some recs !!
Some that check boxes in theory but I couldn't get in to:
- Name of the wind
- Perdido St Station (I really wanted to love this but I think there was too many visual descriptions of things. Might try City & City later someday)
