Perhaps someone has tried this already and it failed for a variety of reasons. Accountants should unionize. Similar issues that have hurt other lines of work hurt accountants such as overworking, lack of work-life balance, mass layoffs (Sorry again to all the RSM folks recently) which are all issues exacerbated by power dynamics in large public firms especially. Even in industry jobs, unless you find a lucky position, you will often be facing similar issues. I see frequent posts here about burnout, some about how difficult it is to maintain a life/family outside of this profession. We don't have any organization that is actively willing to protect us from any of these issues. All would rather offshore or train AI to replace us eventually if it meant being servile for the corporate overlords.
I know we have professional certifications and a shortage of CPA's, but between AI companies threatening us constantly that they're trying to take our jobs and actual offshoring that is already occurring should we not be working to protect ourselves. A shortage is especially important in this discussion as the dialogue I have largely heard around our field is about how we are overworked by and large. That won't attract a majority of kids to the profession. I am not saying that this would all get magically fixed immediately, but it is time that we push for better conditions and more consistency if not for ourselves then for those younger joining the field to give reason to actually stick in it.
